Stephen King's second major short fiction collection gathers twenty-two tales of dread and the uncanny, opening with the celebrated novella "The Mist," in which an ordinary New England town is swallowed by a strange fog that hides nightmarish things. The G.P. Putnam's Sons trade hardcover is the chronological true first edition. The copyright page carries the (now famous) statement that "A limited first edition of this book has been published by Scream Press." In reality the Scream/Press signed/limited (1,000 numbered copies, illustrated and signed by J.K. Potter and Stephen King) was DELAYED in production: the Putnam trade shipped June 1985 and the Scream/Press limited did not appear until OCTOBER 1985 — so the Putnam first printing is in fact the first edition to reach the public, despite its own copyright page implying otherwise (publication sequence confirmed by Wikipedia + veryfinebooks). The Scream/Press edition is the deluxe/limited issue prized by collectors but is NOT the chronological first; it also contains an EXTRA story not in the trade — "The Revelations of 'Becka Paulson" (Rolling Stone, 1984) — a textual distinction between the two. Book-club edition & fakes — how to spot a wrong copyPutnam/Book-Club (BOMC) tells for THIS title: (1) NO price ($18.95) on the upper front jacket flap; (2) NO number line on the copyright page; (3) otherwise the BCE jacket art is essentially identical to the trade — a dealer describes it as "Full sized book club edition; identical to the first edition, but missing price on front panel of DJ and number line on copyright page"; (4) look for a small blind-stamp (indented dot/square/circle) on the lower-right of the REAR board; (5) thinner/lighter paper, often glued rather than sewn, sometimes slightly smaller trim. Absence of the $18.95 price + absence of the number line = book club, NOT a first.

Also watch for: (1) Price-CLIPPED jackets passed off as firsts — without the $18.95 corner you cannot confirm the jacket, and a clipped jacket can also mask a book-club jacket; demand the intact $18.95. DRAFT IS CORRECT — NO DOWNWARD CORRECTION WARRANTED. The 500,000 trade-printing figure is not overstated lore; it survives adversarial check via an INDEPENDENT second source (markwestwriter.blogspot.com, a King biographical retrospective) that matches stephenkingcollector.com exactly and adds a plausible sell-through trajectory (720,000 sold by end of 1985; +100,000 before 1990). This is consistent with King's status as a guaranteed bestseller by 1985, so the figure is large but credible — unlike the inflated lore common for EARLY King titles (note the verified ~30,000 first trade printing for Carrie 1974, which the draft correctly did NOT carry over to 1985). No widely catalogued in-text typo state-change separates first-state trade firsts; the number-line "1" + the $18.95 jacket + the Scream/Press statement are the load-bearing first-printing markers. Book-club edition (the trap): $15–45. Book Club Edition (BOMC) is the dominant trap: physically near-identical, frequently mislisted as a "first edition."
